megabus.com wins Scottish Transport Award for innovation

  • Third major award for UK’s first low-cost inter-city bus service
  • Passenger numbers top 1.2m as web-based product expands

    • megabus.com, the UK’s first web-based low-cost inter-city bus service, has won a major national award for innovation at the Scottish transport industry Oscars.

    Perth-based transport group Stagecoach’s ground-breaking service, which offers travel between 30 towns and cities across the UK, was named the most innovative transport project at the Scottish Transport Awards 2004.

    It is the third top award for innovation won by megabus.com in the past year and comes as passenger numbers top 1.2million.

    Using a mix of high-capacity double-decker vehicles, bendy buses and luxury double-decker coaches, the megabus.com network offers journeys of up to 575 miles from just £1 per seat (plus 50p booking fee).

    More than 275 people from across the Scottish transport industry attended the awards in Edinburgh, which were organised by the Centre for Transport Policy in Aberdeen to recognise and reward excellence in transport.

    megabus.com beat off competition from five other shortlisted entrants – East Dunbartonshire Council, Highland Rail Partnership, Stirling Timber Transport Liaison Group, Journey Solutions and NorthTyre Recycling Ltd - to win the innovation award.

    Since being launched in 2003, megabus.com has won awards for innovation at the National Transport Awards and Tayside Business Awards, as well as being a finalist at the recent National Business Awards for Scotland.

    Routes in Scotland cover Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with links to Manchester and London.
