Better Buses for Scotland showcases a series of joint projects between Stagecoach, local authorities, Regional Transport Partnerships and the Scottish Executive, which have attracted huge numbers of people out of their cars and on to the country's buses.

Stagecoach has joined forces with the UK's largest independent hospital provider BMI Healthcare to launch a voluntary heart health screening programme for employees in its UK Bus division. A state-of-the-art 'Healthy Heart Bus' – the first of its kind in the UK - is touring Stagecoach bus depots, providing free heart health check-ups for thousands of staff. The double-decker vehicle has been specially refurbished as a mobile cardio-screening unit equipped with patient consultation facilities and the latest exercise electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment. The £2million initiative is being funded by Stagecoach Group, with support from Chief Executive Sir Brian Souter who has personally pledged £1million towards the project.

Stagecoach Group continues to lead the way in transport innovation. Forthfast: A New Public Transport Initiative outlines the company's vision for a new sea-based connection between Fife and Edinburgh as an alternative to the Forth Road Bridge, one of Scotland's most congested commuter routes. It reviews a two-week trial of a hovercraft service launched in partnership with the Scottish Government and the South East of Scotland Transport Partnership.

Plans have been developed by Stagecoach for a fast ferry in the south west of England, linking the Devon towns of Torbay and Brixham. Around 30,000 passengers used the service during a four-week trial in summer 2008 to test the potential for a permanent sea-based transport link. The Bayfast-branded service made the crossing in 15 minutes, up to six times faster than the same trip by car, and the park and sail concept attracted both commuter and leisure passengers.

The UK's first Bio Buses are running on sustainable 100% biofuel, with passengers recycling used cooking oil to help power the vehicles.

A hi-tech energy management system has helped cut indirect emissions from Stagecoach facilities by more than a third.
